Puff Daddy edges out Oasis sales

After a weeklong hiatus from atop the nation’s album sales charts, Puff Daddy & the Family’s “No Way Out” disc returned to No. 1. The Bad Boy/Arista Records disc’s 153,000 unit tally just barely topped the Stateside bow of “Be Here Now,” the eagerly awaited third album from English rock group Oasis.

More than 152,000 copies of the Epic Records disc were moved during the seven- day period ended Aug. 31, with less than 800 copies separating the No. 1 and No. 2 discs.

The resurgence of Puff Daddy — who benefited from a pair of chatshow stops during the sales period and pre-event publicity surrounding the MTV Music Video Awards, where he’ll perform the show’s opening number — and the Oasis bow caused Fleetwood Mac’s Reprise Records “The Dance” to slip two posts to No. 3 while logging nearly 142,000 copies sold.

Columbia Records/Sony Music Soundtrax “Men in Black” checked in at No. 6 with sales of 96,000 copies and bested the 92,000-unit tally logged by Matchbox 20’s Atlantic Records disc “Yourself or Someone Like You,” which landed at No. 7.

At No. 8 for the second week was Jewel’s Atlantic Records disc “Pieces of You,” which logged sales of 85,000 units. The tally was sufficient to push the disc over the 4 million unit mark.

Mercury teen trio Hanson saw its “Middle of Nowhere” disc slide three notches to No. 9 on sales of 83,000 units, while Bone Thugs-N-Harmony fell three posts to No. 10 with 76,000 copies of its Ruthless Records disc “Art of War” landing in consumers’ hands.
