1957: Ladd big in biz
Dec. 16, 1957:
GOOD MORNING: Encouraging news: J.L. Warner told Alan Ladd to spend more money on future Jaguar Prod’ns … “The Deep Six,” originally set for a spring release, is being shipped for January release. Ladd’s next at WB will be “Guns of the Timberline.” And he’s inked Jeff Richards to a two-a-year deal for Jaguar … Ladd’s family is all working in the pic bizness now, with the exception of youngest daughter Alana — and she’ll be in it soon, too … Son David, 10, receives his “Proud Rebel” salary from Sam Goldwyn Jr. over a five-year period: Ladd gets 10% of the gross … Carol Lee Ladd tests at 20th-Fox this week; “Laddie,” a USC bizness major, is working in the Jaguar office after school hours — but isn’t getting paid by poppa! … The Union Bank has opened its branch in the Ladds’ office building (Rexford and Wilshire) but Sue Carol Ladd had to hitch a ride (from actor John Close) on Beverly Glen Friday night when one of Ladd’s fleet of cars broke down. (2006 update: “Laddie” (Alan Ladd Jr.) showed his latest film, “Gone Baby, Gone” to Disney this week. Ben Affleck wrote, directed and produced with Laddie and Dan Rissner. Cast includes Chelsea Ladd. Laddie next starts “A Dream of Red Mansions” with Bruce Beresford directing. Ladd was to have started “The Tortoise and the Hair” next year with Robert Altman directing.)
